PR & Communications Manager, EMEA

Cleary Gottlieb is seeking a proactive and dynamic PR and communications professional to lead our communications activity across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Helping to raise the firm’s profile and protect our reputation across all our markets, the role involves creating clear and innovative communications strategies and initiatives across traditional and new media, aligned to the firm’s strategic objectives. Working closely with the Global Director of Marketing & Communications, the PR and Communications team in New York, and other colleagues, this role will articulate and promote the firm’s messages to all stakeholders, reflecting the firm’s vision, strategy and values.

Responsibilities- Media

  • Develop and implement a high impact PR and communications plan for EMEA that reinforces and expands Cleary’s market prominence and conveys the firm’s values and messages to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the legal industry and developments as well as the firm’s strategic priorities to influence and drive PR activities.
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with business and legal journalists from key national and pan-European publications read by the firm’s client base
  • Work closely with Practice Group Leaders (PGLs), other partners and the practice and industry business development teams to develop bespoke public relations plans for each area of strategic focus. In addition, develop EMEA PR plans for all marketing campaigns as part of a broader campaign plan.
  • Able to convert complex matters and messages into clear and concise content appropriate for the intended internal and external audience.
  • Draft compelling content for external and internal publication, focused on clear and consistent messaging aligned to the firm’s strategic objectives.
  • Monitor matter information to allow the preparation of appropriate external releases on deals.
  • Advise and assist firm leadership on executive communications, including those of a sensitive or potentially crisis-related nature.
  • Advise other members of the professional services team, including the Talent, DEI and Pro Bono teams, to support in communicating clear messages to external audiences.
  • Work closely with the Risk team on the development of policies and guidelines relating to public relations, as well as avoiding conflicts and minimizing risk in our external commentary.
  • Work closely with the Senior Brand, Digital and Content manger, to ensure we have consistency in our messages across all forms of media and content.
  • Provide guidance on different publications and conference providers to allow team members across Europe to respond appropriately to frequent sales approaches.
  • Coach and work one-to-one with firm leaders, lawyers and other stakeholders regarding media interactions.
  • Act as the firm’s spokesperson, as required.
  • Manage a robust editorial calendar of award opportunities and directory deadlines, and advise on submission strategy and messaging.
  • Manage, mentor and develop a team of 3 Communications professionals in EMEA.

Skills and Competencies

The person who fulfils this role needs to be (i) self-starting, enthusiastic and motivated (ii) enjoy being hands on; (iii) be a team player; (iv) have the ability to work with and motivate lawyers to become involved in the process of communicating with the media (v) have a strong ability to pitch story ideas and profiles effectively; and (vi) be able to multi-task and juggle priorities with confidence.

  • A minimum of five to seven years media relations/PR/communications experience, ideally within a law firm or professional services firm.
  • A track record of delivering PR strategies demonstrated by regular and favorable press coverage.
  • Strong relationships with relevant journalists.
  • Impeccable written and verbal communications skills.
  • Detail-oriented, and organized work style.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Sound judgment.
  • Ability to manage multiple deliverables within a tight timeframe and deliver high quality work.
  • Proactive approach to defining needs and delivering solutions.
  • Ability to engage and influence senior stakeholders.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with the ability to work well with and build trust with different stakeholders and build consensus around new programs and initiatives.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues across the BDMC function and the wider Firm.
