Cleary Gottlieb has been active in Italy since the mid-1980s, representing Italian companies and multinationals prior to the opening of our Rome office in 1998.

Centered in Rome and Milan, the firm’s Italian practice provides clients worldwide with integrated Italian, pan-European and U.S. legal services. With nearly 40 lawyers, including two U.S. lawyers, our Italian offices provide clients with an array of talent and experience, including lawyers who speak French, German, Spanish and Russian, in addition to English and Italian, and several who are qualified to practice law in jurisdictions outside of Italy.

We focus on high-profile transactions domestically as well as complex transactions that cross borders and involve laws in multiple jurisdictions. Cleary offers clients sophisticated Italian and EU law advice combined with significant experience with respect to the laws of the other principal European jurisdictions and of the United States. Our Italian practice chiefly serves multinational corporations and financial institutions headquartered inside and outside of Italy in:

  • Mergers and acquisitions
  • Capital markets
  • Litigation and arbitration
  • Antitrust, EU law and Regulatory matters (Energy, Telecom and Media, Financial Services, Environmental)
  • Banking and finance
  • Bankruptcy and restructuring
  • Tax
