On April 9 and 10, 2013, Cleary Gottlieb partners Till Müller-Ibold and Paul Marquardt presented a seminar on the European Union and United States sanctions regime in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Given the growing importance and international reach of US and EU sanctions, it is more important than ever before that economic actors understand the potential impact of the sanctions regimes on their business, particularly those active in the GCC, which has longstanding trading links with sanctioned countries. In recent years, US authorities have been increasingly aggressive in targeting offshore US dollar transactions, and US sanctions with respect to Iran and, to a lesser extent, Syria have been extended to target non-US persons engaged in transactions with no US connection at all.
