Cleary Gottlieb Elects Mark Leddy Managing Partner

December 17, 2010

International law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP announced today that Mark Leddy has been elected Managing Partner effective January 1, 2011. Mark Leddy will succeed Mark Walker, who has been Managing Partner since 2005.

Mr. Leddy is widely recognized as one of the leading antitrust and competition lawyers in the United States and internationally. He joined the firm as a partner in 1986 and has been based in the Washington, D.C. office. From 1991 to 1994, Mr. Leddy was resident in the Brussels office of the firm. He will now split his time between Washington, D.C. and New York.

Mr. Walker commented: “In my nearly 25 years of working with Mark Leddy, he has impressed me with not only his abilities as a lawyer but also his strengths as a thoughtful leader.”

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Leddy was with the U.S. Department of Justice for 14 years. He joined the Antitrust Division in New York in 1972, served as Chief of the Division’s Special Litigation Section in Washington, D.C. beginning in 1978, became Deputy Director of Operations in 1981, and was named Deputy Assistant Attorney General, the highest career position in the Antitrust Division, in 1984. He received a J.D. degree in 1971 and an undergraduate degree in 1968 from Boston College.

“As Managing Partner, I’ll continue Mark Walker’s strategy of thoughtful expansion, while at the same time maintaining our one-firm structure and our strong tradition of legal excellence, innovation and internationalism. I also intend to continue my current role in representing and supporting the firm’s clients.”

Of Mark Walker, Mr. Leddy said: “By any measure, Mark Walker has been an outstanding Managing Partner and leader. Under his leadership, we have significantly expanded our presence in Asia with the opening of our Beijing office and the launch of a local Hong Kong law practice, deepened our already strong Latin America practice with the announcement of plans to open an office in São Paulo, and significantly enhanced our litigation strength in the United States and Europe. The firm grew from 850 to approximately 1,100 lawyers worldwide and we increased our global revenue substantially.”

Mr. Walker joined the firm in 1966 and became a partner in 1975. Throughout his career, he has been a key figure in expanding Cleary Gottlieb’s global presence, particularly in Latin America and Asia. Widely recognized as one of the world’s leading lawyers in the area of sovereign debt restructuring, Mr. Walker has advised numerous governments and has assisted in the formulation, negotiation and documentation of arrangements that have become models for the management of international debt crises.
