Togo Democracy Activist in Political Asylum Win

July 5, 2005

Cleary Gottlieb won political asylum for pro bono client Mensan Teko Kinvi, a scholar and democracy activist who has been involved in activities to change the dictatorial regime in Togo since 1990. He was an active member of Togo’s main opposition party, the Union of Forces for Change. According to his application for asylum, Mr. Kinvi was arrested and held under allegedly unconscionable conditions and received numerous death threats because of his political beliefs and activities. He fled to the United States after receiving a summons for another appearance by the national police.
