The American Bar Association has selected Cleary Gottlieb as a recipient of the 2016 Pro Bono Publico Award.
The award recognizes Cleary’s diverse pro bono efforts, including freeing the wrongfully convicted, vacating hundreds of prostitution convictions for sex trafficking victims, challenging the fraudulent practice of conversion therapy, and protecting the rights of immigrants. In 2015, Cleary lawyers dedicated over 63,000 hours to more than 400 pro bono clients.
“We’re very proud of the ABA Pro Bono Publico award,” said Mark Leddy, the firm’s Managing Partner. “Pro bono work has been a high priority for our law firm for decades and reflects a deep commitment to help the poor and marginalized among us. I want to thank all of our lawyers and support staff, and especially Jennifer Kroman, our Director of Pro Bono Practice, for their dedication and hard work.”
The firm was nominated for the award by Lawyers Alliance for New York, New York Lawyers for Public Interest, and The Legal Aid Society, organizations that frequently partner with Cleary on pro bono projects.
The winners were selected by the ABA’s Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service, and the awards were presented during the ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California, on August 6, 2016.
