Senior Business Development Manager
Reporting to the Global Director of Business Development, Practices, this role is responsible for leading the business development, marketing & communications (BDMC) activities for Cleary Gottlieb’s prestigious Paris office, and being the BD lead for the office’s Corporate Practice.
This role will work closely with partners/lawyers, BDMC colleagues and other members of the professional team on client development and profile-raising priorities.
Responsibilities
The Senior Business Development Manager will:
- Build strong and trusting relationships with the Paris partners and lawyers to fully understand their practice and proactively identify opportunities for cross-practice client development and profile-raising. The role will support all practices, and will be the BD lead for the Corporate practice.
- As the BD lead for the Corporate practice, this role will support with the development and implementation of the practice business plans as they relate to the Paris office, supporting the execution of proactive client engagement and profile raising activities, as well as delivering high impact, high quality pitches, directory submissions and other deliverables
- Manage 3 BDMC team members located in Paris. Foster a collaborative and high-performance environment and help promote an exceptional culture and work product across the team.
- Work with the Global Business Development Director of Practices and the Global Marketing & Communications Director to create and implement best practices across the office and oversee the development and work product of the team.
- Manage pitches and RFP responses, directory and award submissions, conference sponsorships/attendance, and the development/maintenance of credentials and other relevant marketing materials, ensuring that each is thoughtfully tailored to the specific opportunity at hand, and of a consistently high quality.
- Working closely with the EMEA PR Senior Manager, influence and drive PR activities across the Paris office to enhance our profile in the market.
- Support the execution of the firm’s practice business plans as they relate to the Paris office, including tracking and report on progress.
- Working closely with the EMEA Events Senior Specialist and external vendors to deliver high quality, impactful events to our clients within the French market.
- Support global, regional and local cross-selling and client targeting efforts, including as they relate to the firm’s priority client program.
- Conduct client feedback interviews and ensure that feedback is onboarded and acted upon, as appropriate.
- Work with the Market & Competitive Intelligence team to conduct research on existing and prospective clients, competitor activity, and industry or market trends to help drive strategic decisions and create revenue/profitability opportunities.
- Act as the BD lead for at least 1 of the firm’s priority clients (with a Paris-based relationship partner), helping coordinate the relationship globally and leveraging a strong understanding of the clients’ strategies, challenges, and competitive and regulatory landscapes to identify client development opportunities.
- Coordinate with other teams such as Global Proposals, Events, Marketing & Content Strategy, etc. to ensure a seamless process that will help raise the profile of the firm.
- Be the key spokesperson for the Paris BDMC team in sharing relevant activities and information across the Paris partnership.

- Fluency in French and English is essential.
Education/Experience
- Bac + 5 or equivalent.
- A minimum of eight years’ business development experience in an international law firm or professional services environment.
