Cleary Gottlieb Breaks New Ground in Chambers Asia 2009 Guide

November 13, 2008

Cleary Gottlieb achieved notable results in the just-released Chambers Asia 2009 Client’s Guide. The publication ranks the leading law firms and lawyers across the entire Asian continent in more than 20 areas of law. Reflecting our strength in the region, Chambers Asia distinguished ten Cleary Gottlieb practices, up from nine last year, and eight Cleary Gottlieb lawyers working in China, China/Hong Kong, Hong Kong, India, Philippines and South Korea. In addition, Sung K. Kang was cited as a leading individual for the first time. The firm was also commended for its “Asia-wide” work, earning a top tier ranking for its Corporate/M&A: Private Equity practice.

The following Cleary Gottlieb practices are recognized for being the best or among the best in their respective regions based on Chambers Asia’s interviews with firm clients and competitors:

Capital Markets: Debt & Equity: “Though historically best known in the region for its Korean practice, the firm now boasts a strong capital markets practice in China and is renowned for its excellent performance in the Indian market, too. From its Hong Kong base, Cleary continues to operate one of the largest and most experienced Korean practices in the region. The group is a favourite among Korean issuers because ‘it understands the demands of the Korean market; it is the best advocate of our interests and backs us all the way.’”

Corporate/M&A & Private Equity: “Cleary Gottlieb has accumulated an excellent range of private equity deal experience in the regional markets and comes highly recommended by observers, who admire a team that ‘takes full ownership of deals and remains fully aware of its clients’ needs.’”

Corporate M&A: Foreign: “Noted for its ‘impressive global M&A capacity’ and excellent financing abilities, this US firm is a long-term player in Hong Kong and has further extended its capacity via its Beijing office, which was established in 2006.”

Private Equity: “Clients come to Cleary for its ‘in-depth expertise on Asian deals,’ and draw attention to the lawyers’ capacity to ‘take ownership of deals and look upon these almost as their own investments.’… The firm’s strong global network ensures that it is valued for its ability to ‘manage a transaction and identify the risks in a way that purely local counsel might not.’”

China/Hong Kong

Capital Markets: International & Hong Kong Law: Debt and Equity: “According to its clients, this team ‘ensures that our interests are looked after,’ and the lawyers are ‘able to put themselves in your shoes and show you the way forward on deals.’”

Hong Kong

Corporate/M&A: “The firm’s local knowledge is built on more than 25 years’ experience in Hong Kong. It recently opened an office in Beijing, enabling the practice to capitalise fully on its good track record for cross-border matters. The firm is chiefly recognised by peers as an impressive force in private equity transactions.”

Private Equity: Buyouts: “Market sources admire this team for taking full ownership of deals as it remains fully aware of its clients’ needs and is mindful of their limitations.”

Overseas Counsel: Corporate & Finance: “The twin drivers of this ‘high-quality and dynamic practice’ are Hong Kong and London, with a ‘very well-integrated team’ split between the two.

Overseas Counsel: “The firm’s Philippines-related work emanates chiefly from the Hong Kong office, and has a strong capital markets flavour. Clients speak of ‘a solid team that staffs transactions well.’”

South Korea

Overseas Experts: “With one of the oldest and largest Korea practices among overseas firms, this group has virtually unrivalled name recognition. ‘Clearly a frontrunner’ in capital markets, the team is widely known for its close relationships with issuers.”
