The Afghan Pro Bono Initiative, a collaboration between Cleary Gottlieb, Refugee Legal Support, Safe Passage International, and other international law firms, has won the 2022 LawWorks Award for Most Effective Pro Bono Partnership.
Launched in March 2022, the Afghan Pro Bono Initiative provides urgent pro bono advice and legal representation to Afghan refugees as they try to find safe routes to sanctuary and reunite with family members in the United Kingdom. The initiative enables volunteers across 14 law firms and two NGOs to help address some of the significant need for legal advice since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021.
This marks the second time in three years that Cleary has been involved in the partnership winning this national award. In 2020, the LawWorks award for Most Effective Pro Bono Partnership recognized Cleary’s ongoing pro bono partnership with the women-only Free Legal Advice Clinic at Toynbee Hall.
