Cleary Gottlieb Honored with Multiple Deal of the Year Awards for Work in Asia

Cleary Gottlieb was counsel in multiple Asia-related matters recognized by one or more of International Financial Law Review, Asian-Counsel, Finance-Asia and India Business Law Journal as Deals of the Year. The winning transactions include:

  • Tanjung Jati B Expansion coal-fired power plant project in Indonesia. Cleary Gottlieb was counsel to P.T. Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), the Indonesian national electricity company, in this $2.3 billion expansion and financing project, which International Financial Law Review named “Project Finance Deal of the Year.”

  • Chinalco’s $14 billion equity investment in Rio Tinto, the largest-ever overseas investment by a Chinese enterprise. This matter was named “Investment and Joint Venture of the Year” by Asian-Counsel and “China Deal of the Year” by FinanceAsia. The firm provided antitrust and regulatory advice to Alcoa in connection with its participation in the investment.

  • Reliance Power’s $2.9 billion IPO, the largest-ever IPO in India. The firm represented the underwriters in the transaction and it was named “IPO of the Year” by Asian-Counsel and “Capital Markets and Finance Deal of the Year” by India Business Law Journal.

  • Temasek Holdings’ multi-billion dollar investments in Merrill Lynch. Asian-Counsel named these transactions “State-Linked Investment of the Year” and Cleary Gottlieb represented Singaporean sovereign wealth fund Temasek in both deals.
