Cleary Gottlieb partner David Becker will retire from the firm this month to join the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as General Counsel and Senior Policy Director. In this newly created role, Mr. Becker will serve as the Commission’s chief legal officer and be the senior staff person responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of Commission policies.
During his time at Cleary Gottlieb, Mr. Becker has been a leading contributor to the firm’s financial services and securities regulation practices, and he is widely recognized as one of the most prominent lawyers in the United States in these areas. Mr. Becker joined Cleary Gottlieb from the SEC in 2002 after serving as its General Counsel. In this role, he advised the Commission on virtually all enforcement, rule-making and regulatory actions that it took. Prior to joining the SEC, David spent twenty years in private practice in Washington.
