Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton announced today that Matthew Bachrack, a Senior Attorney currently practicing antitrust law in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, has relocated to the Hong Kong office. Mr. Bachrack’s move adds an Asian presence to Cleary Gottlieb’s antitrust practices in Europe and the United States. The Asia practice will be an integral part of Cleary Gottlieb’s award-winning global antitrust and competition team, which is consistently ranked in the top tier by international legal guides and directories.
Nicholas Levy, an antitrust partner in Cleary Gottlieb’s Brussels and London offices, commented that Mr. Bachrack’s move will strengthen the firm’s ability to advise its clients in Asia and will give clients in the region greater access to Cleary Gottlieb’s international network and experience. “We have for many years had great success advising clients on the Asian aspects of multi-national transactions. We recognize, though, that as antitrust enforcement in Asia has developed, many clients increasingly want a local team to work alongside our competition practices in Europe and the U.S.,” he said. “Establishing an antitrust desk in Hong Kong will strengthen our global practice by adding an Asian dimension to our established European and U.S. antitrust practices. Matt is a terrific antitrust lawyer, who is extremely well placed to develop and coordinate our work involving Asian antitrust issues as well as our work internationally for Asian-based clients.”
Mr. Bachrack’s practice focuses on merger reviews, antitrust investigations, counseling and civil antitrust litigation. He also has extensive experience in pre-merger filings under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act. Commenting on Mr. Bachrack’s move, Mark Leddy, an antitrust partner in the Washington office said: “Matt has been a core member of our transatlantic team for years, playing a key role in many of our most challenging international merger, cartel, antitrust litigation and other matters. Matt is also a delightful person and a natural for this role.”
Mr. Bachrack has represented clients in various industries, including chemicals and plastics, oil & gas, branded consumer products, defense, information technology, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and health care, travel services, banking and insurance, agriculture, and automotive & other manufacturing.
Mr. Bachrack contributed to the ABA working group that has provided comments on the implementing rules under China’s Anti-Monopoly law.
“This is an exciting move for me and an important one for Cleary Gottlieb,” said Mr. Bachrack. “I am very much looking forward to being in the middle of the rapid developments in antitrust law throughout the region and helping clients stay ahead of the changes.”
Mr. Bachrack joined the firm in 2001 and became a Senior Attorney in 2008. He received a J.D. degree with High Honors from George Washington University Law School in 2001 and an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1998.
Mr. Bachrack is a member of the Bars in Virginia and the District of Columbia.
