Cleary Gottlieb Wins LatinFinance’s Best Law Firm Award in Latin America

Cleary Gottlieb has been named the “Best Law Firm” in Latin America and Mark Walker the “Best Latin Financier Lawyer” over the last twenty years by LatinFinance magazine at its 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner and Awards ceremony. Senior counsel Roger Thomas was shortlisted for a lifetime achievement award at the April 5 event in Miami.

Cleary Gottlieb was previously acknowledged by LatinFinance in the publication’s 15th Year Anniversary Issue as the “Top Latin American Legal Advisor (1988-2002).” Cleary Gottlieb’s work in the region has also been recognized by LatinFinance with numerous “Deals of the Year” awards. Cleary Gottlieb most recently won the “Follow-On Equity Deal of the Year 2007” for the firm’s work on the Usinas Siderúrgicas de Minas Gerais $995 million equity offering and the “Local Currency Deal of the Year 2007” for the América Móvil Ps. 8 billion notes offering.

LatinFinance also recognized a number of the firm’s clients for shaping the landscape of Latin America over the past twenty years. Long-standing client Mexico was named “Best Sovereign Issuer” of the last twenty years. The firm has represented Mexico in several noteworthy matters, including Mexico’s ground-breaking liability management offerings in the mid-1990s. In addition, the Brady Bond, created by Cleary Gottlieb in the late 1980s to assist Mexico in restructuring its debt, was selected as “Best Debt Deal” of the last twenty years. Banco Itaú was named “Best Retail Bank” of the last twenty years. The firm recently represented Itaú as underwriter in Redecard’s recent $2 billion IPO, one of the largest-ever offerings on the São Paulo Stock Exchange, and in its recent follow-on offering.
