Cleary Wins ‘Restructuring Team of the Year’ and Naomi Tarawali Is ‘Highly Commended’ for Litigation at the 2020 British Legal Awards

November 19, 2020

Cleary Gottlieb has been awarded “Restructuring Team of the Year” at the 2020 Legal Week British Legal Awards.

The restructuring award recognizes Cleary’s work advising on Barbados’ sovereign debt restructuring, with the Judges praising the team for its “impressive and important contribution to the future economic viability for the small nation in this case.”

The restructuring award follows the Restructuring Law Firm of the Year recognition won by Cleary at the IFLR Americas Awards in May 2020. The bonds offered in the external debt restructuring included an innovative “natural disaster clause” that allows Barbados to improve its financial resilience in the event of a natural disaster, which made Barbados the only country in the world whose public debt stock is climate resilient as a result of the inclusion of a natural disaster clause in its bonds.

The British Legal Awards also highly commended Cleary associate Naomi Tarawali in the “Litigation Rising Star” category. Naomi has represented corporates and high-net-worth individuals in commercial arbitration, investor-state arbitration, and international litigation proceedings, as well as in mediation and ADR processes.

The annual awards celebrate achievement, excellence, and innovation of law firms across the industry.
