David Becker Receives ASECA’s William O. Douglas Award

Cleary Gottlieb senior counsel David Becker has been selected as a recipient of the Association of Securities & Exchange Commission Alumni, Inc.’s (ASECA) 2019 William O. Douglas Award.

The William O. Douglas Award is given annually to an SEC alumnus or alumna for major contributions to the development of the federal securities laws or service to the financial and SEC community with distinction, and whose achievements are considered extraordinary by his or her peers.

David joined Cleary as a partner after serving at the Securities & Exchange Commission twice, from 2000 to 2002 and from 2009 to 2011.While at the SEC, he led the Securities & Exchange Commission’s Office of General Counsel in advising the Commission on all matters before it and in advocating on behalf of the Commission in a broad variety of matters. David was particularly active in preparation of the Commission’s definitive materiality pronouncement, SAB 99; the Commission’s auditor independence rulemaking in 2000; and the Commission’s participation in the regulatory reform efforts that became the Dodd-Frank Act, as well as the initial implementing rules.
