Jeff Karpf Named 2021 ‘Dealmaker of the Year’ by The American Lawyer

March 23, 2021

Cleary Gottlieb partner Jeff Karpf has been named a 2021 “Dealmaker of the Year” by The American Lawyer for his role advising Alphabet in its $5.75 billion sustainability bond issuance—the largest on record.

The deal was part of a broader $10 billion debt offering and came during a year when the pandemic and racial justice protests stirred up a wave of interest in environmental, social, and corporate governance-focused investing. The offering sought to address all of those issues with a commitment to using the money to fund projects covering not just environmental causes, but affordable housing, COVID-19-related small business relief, and support for Black-owned businesses.

Jeff also handled Verizon’s $1 billion green bond offering in 2020, which was underwritten by minority- and women-owned firms.
