Katherine Mooney Carroll to Join US DOD

April 15, 2016

Cleary Gottlieb partner Katherine Mooney Carroll will join the U.S. Department of Defense as Counselor to Secretary of Defense Ash Carter.

Katherine joined Cleary Gottlieb as an associate in 2001 and became a partner in 2012.  Before moving to the firm’s Washington office in 2003, she was resident in the Hong Kong and New York offices. Prior to studying law, Katherine was executive director of the Open Society Institute in Uzbekistan and served as special assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy.

During her time at Cleary Gottlieb, Katherine has been a leader in the firm’s global banking and financial institutions practice.  She has advised many of the world’s leading financial institutions on regulatory matters, including the implementation of reforms pursuant to the Dodd-Frank Act and compliance with U.S. sanctions and anti-money laundering laws.

“Katherine is an exceptionally talented lawyer who embodies the internationalism that has always been at the core of our firm. She will be an invaluable addition to the Department of Defense.  While she will certainly be missed, we also share her excitement for this opportunity and applaud her commitment to public service.  We are grateful for the many contributions Katherine has made to the firm and offer her our best wishes in this new role,” said Cleary Gottlieb Managing Partner Mark Leddy.

Katherine will begin her new role at the Pentagon on April 20, 2016.
