Cleary Gottlieb is representing Medco Health Solutions, Inc. in its acquisition of a majority stake in Europa Apotheek Venlo B.V. The acquisition is part of a plan for extensive strategic cooperation between Medco and Europa. The deal was announced on April 8 and closed on April 28.
Medco is a leading global pharmacy benefit manager. In 2007, it had total revenues of more than $44 billion. Medco’s headquarters are in Franklin Lakes, N.J. For more than 25 years, Medco has provided solutions to improve quality in the supply of prescription drugs. Recently, Fortune Magazine awarded Medco the highest ranking in the “Health Care: Pharmacy and Other Services” sector of its America’s Most Admired Companies List.
Europa is one of the leading mail-order pharmacies in Germany. The company has recently received broad media coverage due to their innovative cooperation with dm-drogerie, Germany’s second largest drugstore chain, to offer order and collection services of pharmaceuticals (“Pharma Punkt”).
