National Law Journal Names Cleary Gottlieb Lawyers 2015 Trailblazers

September 29, 2015

The National Law Journal has named two Cleary Gottlieb lawyers, partner Brian Byrne and partner George S. Cary, to its list of 2015 Trailblazers in M&A and antitrust.

The NLJ praised Byrne for his work representing Family Dollar when it was for sale and his representation of Maytag in its acquisition by Whirlpool. He told the newspaper that the clients were the big draw into antitrust work: “I loved getting to learn all about a company’s business, and the more detail you can learn about the clients and their competitors, the better you are going to do in antitrust.”

Cary earned his spot on the list with his defense of Broadcom in its case against Qualcomm and his economics-based approach to antitrust cases. “Antitrust is a way to bring that into daily practice,” he told the NLJ. “I like the action of being a lawyer, but the substance of economics.”
