Pro Bono Client Freed in Landmark Bond Case

June 14, 2017

Cleary Gottlieb, in partnership with The Bronx Defenders, successfully secured reduced bond for a detained Haitian asylum seeker in a habeas action filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

On June 14, 2017, U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams adopted the Firm’s argument that ability to pay bond must be considered by immigration judges and that a lack of consideration for a detainee’s financial ability violates immigrant clients’ constitutional and statutory rights.

The landmark ruling was reported in Courthouse News.
