Cleary Gottlieb successfully represented an Algerian refugee in Tunisia, in his application for resettlement in Sweden.
The client, Mr. B, was referred to the firm by IRAP, the International Refugee Assistance Project. Mr. B, a transgender man, was regularly abused and severely tortured by his family for over 20 years for not conforming to the traditional gender role as a female in Algeria. While he escaped to Tunisia, he was in constant fear of being tracked down by his family and was in need of medical and legal protection.
Mr. B’s refugee status was granted in March 2018 and the Cleary team assisted Mr. B in his resettlement application together with other local NGOs. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees resettled Mr. B to Stockholm, Sweden in October 2018.
