Angela Dunning Named Litigator of the Week

Cleary Gottlieb partner Angela Dunning was named a “Litigator of the Week” by The American Lawyer’s Litigation Daily for a significant early win on behalf of Meta Platforms.

She was recognized for successfully defending Meta in one of the first copyright cases involving the use of literary works to train generative AI. U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria held that Meta’s use of works by 13 prominent authors to train its Llama models was “highly transformative” and that the plaintiffs had failed to show market harm.

While the ruling represents a key fair use victory for Meta, the court emphasized it was based on the specific arguments and record presented in this case.
