June 28, 2013

Cleary Gottlieb placed sixth among the top law firms appearing worldwide as arbitration counsel in The American Lawyer’s biennial Arbitration Scorecard, advancing one place from 2011. The firm was counsel in 15 of 274 arbitration matters surveyed by the Scorecard, all either commercial disputes with stakes of at least $500 million or treaty disputes with stakes of at least $100 million that were active in 2011 through 2012.

Of the 121 matters in which at least $1 billion is in controversy, the firm was counsel in six, including Giovanna a Beccara et al. v. Republic of Argentina; OAO Tatneft v. Ukraine; Solvay SA and Solvay Specialty Polymers SpA v. Edison SpA; Republic of Senegal v. ArcelorMittal; Dr. Andreas Ringstmeier in his capacity as insolvency receiver for AgfaPhoto GmbH v. Agfa-Gevaert N.V. et al; and the largest reported arbitration ever, which include a trio of cases - Hulley Enterprises v. Russian Federation; Yukos Universal Limited v. Russian Federation; and Veteran Petroleum Limited v. Russian Federation.

In compiling the Arbitration Scorecard, The American Lawyer relies primarily on information supplied by lawyers involved in the cases, supplemented in some instances by arbitration or court papers, securities disclosures, and media reports. Related cases were counted as a single dispute if they were heard by the same arbitrators. Cases were excluded if they were reported to completion in the previous survey.
