Cleary Gottlieb Receives Sanctuary for Families Pro Bono Achievement Award

October 20, 2016

Sanctuary for Families, an organization that advocates for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence, honored Cleary Gottlieb at its 2016 Above & Beyond Pro Bono Achievement Awards and Benefit ceremony for going “above and beyond” in providing pro bono representation to Ms. G.

Cleary Gottlieb has been working to secure asylum for Ms. G, a survivor of female genital mutilation and sexual violence at the hands of her husband’s political enemies in Burkina Faso. After fleeing to the United States, Ms. G was subjected to sexual, emotional and physical abuse by her husband.

Cleary advised Ms. G throughout her asylum proceedings and following a merits hearing in 2016, the team is hopeful that she will be granted asylum at her next hearing later in 2016. To read more about the case, visit the Sanctuary for Families website.

The award was presented to the firm at a ceremony on October 19, 2016, in New York.
