Cleary Gottlieb was named “Competition & EU Law Firm of the Year” at the 2019 TopLegal Awards.
At the event in Rome, TopLegal cited Cleary’s success for Telecom Italia in the Eutelia and Voiceplus matter, noting the significant amounts at stake (over €700 million), as well as the complexity and unique nature of the issue, which involved an alleged abuse of a dominant position in the non-geographic numbering market.
Senior counsel Mario Siragusa also received the “TopLegal Excellence Award.” Jurors called him a pillar of Italian antitrust, noting his leading role in the firm’s global and European competition practice and as the architect of Cleary’s launch in Italy in 1998. TopLegal highlighted his work for the Metlac group before the UK antitrust authority, assisting them in preventing an acquisition by Dutch Akzo Nobel, which was the first time the UK authority prohibited a transaction between two non-UK companies.
Counsel Gianluca Faella was also recognized as “Lawyer of the Year for Litigation Before EU Courts,” for his work on behalf of the Fondo Interbancario di Tutela dei Depositi (FITD), Italy’s deposit guarantee scheme, against the European Commission.
Winners of the awards are selected each year by TopLegal, along with a committee of the general counsel of leading Italian companies and professionals from the worlds of finance, business, and communications.
