Cleary Gottlieb Partners Katie Gonzalez and Chris Kavanaugh Named a Litigator of the Week Finalist for Representing the College Sports Commission

Cleary Gottlieb partners Katie Gonzalez and Chris Kavanaugh were selected as a “Litigator of the Week” finalist by The American Lawyer’s Litigation Daily.

The team was recognized for representing the College Sports Commission (CSC), the body set up to oversee collegiate name, image, and likeness (NIL) rules following the settlement in House v. NCAA.

In what was seen as a key test of the CSC’s enforcement authority, an arbitrator upheld the commission’s decision denying the NIL deals of 18 University of Nebraska football players worth a combined $7.5 million. The arbitrator agreed with the CSC’s determination that the underlying deals did not comply with NCAA rules.
