John Kupiec Discusses M&A Growth in the Middle-Market Private Data Sector in Law360

Cleary Gottlieb partner and Co-Leader of the Sponsor Solutions Group John Kupiec was quoted in a Law360 article on the accelerating M&A activity among middle- and lower-market private market data providers.

In the article, John notes that while larger players have scaled businesses that are successful on a standalone basis, smaller companies that have found a niche with specific appeal to a growing industry are where the most activity is taking place. “The deals can range from a more team-oriented ‘acqui-hire’ to a full business, so there is a real range in this area,” says John.

John also discussed the advantages of acquiring data providers in-house, noting that being reliant on a data provider’s pricing scheme is “less than ideal” and that ownership creates opportunities to control and develop proprietary datasets that may not be available from third-party vendors.
