Cleary Gottlieb Files Suit to Vindicate Rights of Transgender Man to Fair Accommodations

June 7, 2014

Cleary Gottlieb, with pro bono co-counsel The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund, is representing Mr. E., a 24-year-old transgender man in a suit against the New York City Parks and Recreation Department. In July 2013, Mr. E., who has been living as a male since February 2012, was denied his right to use a locker room at the Joseph H. Lyons Pool, a public pool in Staten Island. Mr. E.’s suit asks the New York State Supreme Court, New York County, to rule for the first time that denying transgender people the use of a restroom or locker room that matches their sex constitutes discrimination in violation of the New York City Human Rights Law.
