Following the departure of the UK from the EU, and the UK government’s decision not to adopt the EU’s sustainable finance framework, it may be tempting to unfavourably compare the ambition and reach of the UK’s sustainable finance policies to the EU’s.

In reality, however, having left the EU, the UK government has sought to strengthen the UK’s regulatory regime relating to climate, the environment and other sustainable development issues. The government and financial services regulators have undertaken a multifaceted programme of sustainable law and regulation that aims, among other things, to transform the UK into a net zero aligned economy, and promote the UK as a leading global financial centre for green and sustainable investment.
