B.J. Altvater’s practice focuses on international trade and national security matters, including CFIUS, global foreign direct investment (FDI) regimes, the U.S. Outbound Investment Security Program, and Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency mitigation of foreign ownership, control, or influence (FOCI).

B.J. has represented clients in over 100 reviews by CFIUS in transactions with a combined value of over $200 billion. He has negotiated many of CFIUS’s most complex and significant national security agreements.

Prior to entering private practice, B.J. was an Intelligence Oversight Officer and Policy Analyst at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, where he participated in the Department’s review of CFIUS and Team Telecom matters. He also served as an intelligence officer in the United States Air Force.

B.J. joined the firm in 2023.
